A fraction is a part of a whole. The number on top is called the NUMERATOR. The number on the bottom is called the DENOMINATOR. Let's see what that looks like.

Take a look at the circle. What do you notice?
Hopefully you can see that it is cut into TWO equal parts.
The circle is one half blue and one half white.
The denominator represents the number of equal parts. (TWO)
The numerator represents the number of blue pieces. (ONE)
In order to remember which goes on top and which goes on the bottom, think
