Visualizing fractions will help students to determine whether or not fractions are equal.  Ask students to visualize or draw fractions.  Remind them that the equal parts MUST be EQUAL!

Have students physically cut an object in half, and then in fourths.  Let them SEE what it looks like.  Allow students to explore and discuss.

 

Linguini noodles are a great way to let students HOLD an object and break it into equal parts!  They can also be used to teach number lines!
