Third grade is when students first learn about fractions.  Everything students will learn in the future will be an extension of what they learn in third grade.  It is our job to teach students the foundation of a fraction - breaking a part into a whole.  It is more important for them to visualize these parts, rather than learning algorithms.
According to Jo Boaler, kids need to "color code."  They need to draw examples and color them.  "Visual understanding is incredibly powerful for students, adding a whole new level of understanding."    Allow students to make visual connections with fractions!
