 Teachers and Parents

Based on what I have learned throughout my research, here are a few tips to follow while teaching fractions....or anything, for that matter!

Let Them Discover!

Kids are eager!  They want to learn!  Let them play, ask questions and discover BEFORE you lead them to the right answer!

Every MISTAKE you make is progress!

When you make a mistake, your brain grows!  That's right, you read it correctly....YOUR BRAIN GROWS!  Students need to make mistakes!  They need to fail!  Let them!  They'll be better off in the long run!

Growth Mindset

This is huge in my classroom.  I teach my students about growth mindset on the first day of school.  Your brain works differently when you believe in yourself, opposed to when you don't believe in yourself.  When you believe you can do something, synapses fire in your brain, allowing it to grow.  Students need to believe in themselves and they need teachers and parents who believe in them, too!

Don't Overstep

In my classroom, I force my students to do something that could sound mean.  I make them "ride the struggle bus."  In other words, I refuse to help them.  Of course, I will eventually help them, and sometimes it's hard not to jump in and lead them to the answer.  But if I do, who is actually learning?  I make students think, rethink, retry, discuss, and try again.  Only then will I assist them.  This ensures that my students are learning!  Like I said, it can be difficult, but give it a try!  Let them lead the way.
Stay back and let them learn!
