Fractions on a  Number Line

Take a look at this number line.  What do you see?  How many sections are there?  If this number line represents one whole, where is the red dot?  Where is the yellow dot?

Take a moment to think about it.  Then make a prediction!

0

1

Let's look at the red dot.  It appears to be half way between zero and one half.  What would we call that?

What if we drew an imaginary line where the dot is?  We know with fractions, there has to be EQUAL parts.  So we'd need to draw another line down the other half.

There we go!  Now everything looks equal!  When I look at it this way, I see four equal parts.

Or you could picture it like this.  Remember, we all see math differently!

Now let's go back to the original picture.  Where are the dots on the number line?

I like to think of it as if I'm sharing a Snickers Bar with Collin, Aubrie, and Blake!

If you said the red dot was at one fourth and the yellow dot was at three fourths, you were correct!

If not, it's ok!  We'll keep practicing!
